Attractions to see in Tulsa

Tulsa is not as boring as you think, hopefully.

Tulsa has a rich history complete with tons of landmarks, tourist attractions and fun activities for you to see and do with family or friends. Here is my ranked list of things you should experience before you leave TU:

Cave House
This unique landmark, commonly known as the Flintstone House, has been a staple in the Tulsa community since the 1920s. Linda Collier is the house’s enthusiastic owner, tour guide and storyteller. During my one-and-a-half-hour tour, Collier fascinated me with anecdotes about the crazy key lady, prohibition-era tales and the story of how she came to own the enigmatic Cave House. If you decide to go, bring a key to hang on her key tree to garner favor and wear sturdy shoes to climb the drunk stairs. Call Collier at 918-378-1952 to schedule a tour at $15 per person, she accepts cash and Cash App.

The Outsiders House Museum
If you do not know yet, the 1983 classic The Outsiders was filmed right here in this great city. You may have read it as assigned reading for classes, but if you are like me and live on the east coast, you probably have never heard of the book or movie until now. Daniel O’Connor restored The Outsiders House to save it from being demolished and used it to display his expansive collection of memorabilia from the movie. You can walk through the house and see where Ponyboy slept or sit in the same spot where Two-Bit ate chocolate cake for breakfast. There is an exclusive photo collection shot by Joe Cervantes available to see at the house, where you can also buy prints. Tours are typically Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at $10 per person.

Greenwood Rising
This museum is dedicated to Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District and Black Wall Street. I highly suggest everyone complete one of the self-guided tours to learn about the thriving community that built up this district and the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Admission is $15 for adults.

Gathering Place
This giant park is perfect for anyone outdoorsy and is free to the public. There are tons of trails to walk, abstract structures to admire and fitness opportunities to take advantage of. At Peggy’s Pond, there are free rentals for pedal boats and kayaks. Boat operations are sadly suspended until Sept. 6.

Admiral Twin Drive-In
This historic drive-in is a fun way to spend a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night. Each evening show consists of a double feature with tickets priced at $9 per person. They have concessions available for purchase.

Philbrook Museum of Art
The Philbrook is a beautiful piece of architecture with mesmorizing gardens perfect for taking a stroll or doing homework. I am sure the art is great, though I have stuck to doing my homework at wooden tables in the garden, relaxing to the sounds of streaming water and touching the grass.

Center of the Universe
This little landmark is an anomaly to everyone who has experienced it. Next time you travel downtown, find the concrete circle and step inside. Any noise you make echos, though no one outside the circle can hear the echo.

Golden Driller
This huge golden statue is another staple in the Tulsa community. You are not cool unless you visit the Golden Driller and take a picture in front of him. Take a photo of the Golden Driller, photoshop him to your liking and email it to grantdoolin@gmail.com.
