The unfortunate occurrence is
undergoing investigation.
Tragedy struck Oklahoma Friday night
at Bill Jensen Field during the Del City-
Choctaw game. Around 10:15 p.m. Aug.
25, shots were fired late in the third quar-
ter of the Choctaw-Del City high school
football game. As a result, 16-year-old
Cordea Carter was shot in the groin area
and later pronounced dead from his inju-
ries after arriving at OU Medical Center.
According to police, Carter was not a stu-
dent at either school, instead he attended
Midwest City High School. Along with a
couple of others who were injured at the
shooting and transported to a local hos-
pital, a 42-year-old was shot in the chest
by an off-duty Del City police officer
responding to the initial shooting while
working the game. The 42-year-old un-
derwent surgery and has remained in criti-
cal condition. The others injured include a
young female who was treated for a gun-
shot wound to her thigh and two females
believed to be students who retreated from
the scene with a broken wrist and a broken
leg.
Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office and
Del City police are involved in the inves-
tigation but it is being led by the Choctaw
Police Department. According to Choctaw
Police Chief Kelly Marshall, he believes
an argument between at least two men that
broke out on the visitor’s side of the sta-
dium is what led to the shooting. As shots
broke out some students, teachers and fac-
ulty fled the scene seeking safety while
others ducked low to the ground. A Del
City officer working security at the game
also discharged his firearm at the scene
according to Del City Police Chief Loyd
Berger. Police said they have recovered
two guns and eight rounds at the scene.
Chief Marshall stated she will be meeting
with school officials on Saturday to “pro-
vide counseling as well as discuss further
safety measures for our students and spec-
tators.”
Sheriff Tommie Johnson III stated that
a 15-year-old suspected to be connected to
the shooting was arrested on a second-de-
gree murder complaint without incident.
Police are unable to give out informa-
tion on the shooter’s identity due to him
being a juvenile. A witness identified the
shooter to investigators as someone nick-
named Bullet. The witness implied they
knew Bullet from school and claimed that
Carter and someone else got into a con-
frontation at the game. Following the ar-
gument, Bullet shot Carter. This was cor-
roborated by another witness who claimed
Carter got into a fight with someone short-
ly before gunshots were fired.
Officials are planning a press confer-
ence that will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m.
where they will detail the latest informa-
tion. Due to this event, officials will be
working with the school to increase safety
measures for the students. As of right now,
the condolences and prayers of many go
out to the family of Carter and those who
have suffered from the fatal event.
