The Reading and Writing Club brings a fun space for student writers on campus.
This past Wednesday, Feb. 4th, the Reading and Writing club here at The University of Tulsa hosted their first meeting. TU’s Reading and Writing club offers a fun, judgment-free space for all TU students to have a creative outlet for writing, whether it be fiction, nonfiction, poetry or research papers. Since the club is also about reading, this space allows a place to talk to others about your favorite books, articles, plays, poetry, comics, or anything else that you might enjoy reading. Whether you love writing or reading, this club offers a space for you. Members are welcoming people and will be happy to discuss different topics such as movies, classes or other campus events.
The club is open to all majors, disciplines and skill levels. You do not have to be the best at reading or writing to join, with member David Edwards joking, “What we lack in raw talent we make up for in spelling errors!” The Reading and Writing club offers many fun activities such as bookmark making, SNL night and watch parties.
The first meeting was a success with many new faces appearing. It began with a get to know the group Kahoot game, which was a hit with the new and old members alike, as well as a bingo game to get to know each other more. The meeting then went on to include time for conversations between members that allowed everyone to get to know each other, and included conversations about favorite books, movies, superheroes, writing styles, genres and more.
The leadership team of the organization consists of Savannah Maughan as historian, Marcus Coleman as secretary, Cassidy Czachowski, as Vice President, and Vincent Gann as President. According to Czachowski, “The club is a welcoming environment that encourages students to embrace their inner creativity.” Gann seconds this statement, adding, “We’re proud to be a community strengthening creative minds on campus.” Many TU students enjoy the club and the atmosphere, with member Luke Montemayor saying, “It’s a fun space to write and share ideas without fear of judgment.”
This club is great for anyone who enjoys reading and writing and wants to share their projects with others. It is also a place for students who just want to chat about their favorite books and more. Leadership positions will also be available to apply for later this spring if you are looking to gain leadership experience or add running a club to your resume.
The next meeting of TU’s Reading and Writing club will be held on Friday, Feb. 13, at 3:30 in Chapman Hall, room 349. This meeting will feature a fun space to craft by creating bookmarks and chatting. New members are always welcome and encouraged to attend, so be sure to stop by! This club is a great place for readers to make new friends and connections on campus.
