Another week of mixed results for soccer

The Golden Hurricane men’s soccer team took a game break from conference play to face off against the Denver Pioneers this week.

Joe Ruiz put Tulsa in front on a goal off of a corner kick in the first half, and Tulsa held the lead until halftime. Shortly after the half, Denver was able to find an equalizing goal. Miguel Velasquez was determined not to settle for a tie game, though. He took the corner kick earlier in the game that Ruiz scored off, and with twenty minutes remaining in the game, scored the game winning goal.

Tulsa is now 4-5-1 (1-2 American Athletic Conference) this season. They travel to play UCF on Sunday at noon for their next game and will then face off against Temple at home next Saturday.
This week brought a pair of road conference games for the Golden Hurricane women’s soccer team.

First up was a game against Cincinnati. After struggling in the first half, Tulsa found themselves down 2-0 when the Bearcats scored a second goal just after the halftime break. From there, Rachel Thun-Blankenship and Addyson Guthrie scored a goal each to bring the game close. However, Cincinnati managed another goal to secure a 3-2 win.

In the second game of the week, Tulsa traveled to East Carolina. The Pirates scored the lone goal of the game midway through the first half, and the game was fairly uneventful until Tulsa defender Annabeth Fouts was shown a red card in the final ten minutes. East Carolina took the game, 1-0.

The women’s team now own a 3-12-3 (1-6-1 AAC) record on the year. Their next game brings them home to face the Memphis Tigers. They have a long break before that game; the date for the game is Oct. 27 with opening kick at 7 p.m. This will be their final game before the conference tournament.
