Cane Careers’ Countdown to Connections

The Cane Careers department hosts multiple masterclasses preparing students for its upcoming Hurricane Connections event.

As a part of its “Countdown to Connections” event, The University of Tulsa’s Cane Careers team will be hosting multiple events in the upcoming weeks in order to help TU students develop meaningful skills that will help them expand their professional connections. This week and next, there will be two masterclasses. One on Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and another on Tuesday, Feb. 18 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., both in the Student Union. These masterclasses will be interactive workshops led by career coaches with the ultimate goal of preparing students to make meaningful and sincere connections that will leave a lasting impression with employers. At both of these events, coaches will cover three central themes. The first point they will discuss is power skills. Here coaches will give students a chance to practice their interpersonal and communication skills so that they can build their confidence and establish rapport with potential employers. The career coaches will also discuss different strategies that students can use to research companies and employers so that they can stand out during their future networking experiences. Finally, the coaches will discuss the importance of crafting a professional brand that is both unique and representative of an individual’s values and goals. Students are then encouraged to put their newly honed networking skills to the test on Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lorton Performing Arts Center, where the Canes Career department will be hosting a practice networking event. On the 19th, students will engage with both peers and professionals in this interactive event where they will practice introductions and making memorable impressions. While it is not required, it is highly recommended that students register on Handshake for both the classes and events they plan to attend beforehand.

These networking events, however, are not the only masterclasses that the Canes Career coaches will be offering this month as a part of its “Countdown to Connections.” On Monday, Feb. 24 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union, TU students can register and attend a masterclass to learn the intricacies of social media networking and etiquette. This class will examine how to make connections online both authentically as well as professionally, and will demonstrate how students can maximize their professional online profiles to showcase their professional brand and attract relevant employers.

All of these events, of course, are leading up to the Canes Careers’ Spring 2025 Hurricane Connections event on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Student Union. The first of its kind, and a brand new event to the University of Tulsa, the Hurricane Connections event is an opportunity for both students and alumni to meet with and build connections with employers in a variety of industries. All TU students are welcomed, and highly encouraged to register for and attend these masterclasses throughout the next couple of weeks, as well as the Hurricane Connections event at the end of the month.
