Best study spots on campus

Spaces around campus to help you succeed.

As the school year starts and our assignments start to pile up, it is a good idea to get ahead and find the right place to study. The University of Tulsa campus is filled with many great study spots for students to choose from throughout the semester. From designated study rooms to random hidden gems on campus, there is surely a spot nearby to help you focus.

Although your dorm room seems like the best spot for some comfortable privacy, sometimes it can be a huge distraction. Not only will finding a study spot help you focus on your work, but it will also help you get out of your dorm room and more comfortable with campus. Starting with the most prominent study spots:

McFarlin Library
McFarlin Library is at the heart of the campus for students to access easily. There are designated study rooms at the front of the building, including a quiet study room for those who work best in silence. Along with the study rooms, there is also our Starbucks cafe and multiple floors with various tables and chairs open to all. The lower floors also hold books students can check out if needed and a beautiful courtyard access at the bottom of the library. Last year, this part of the library was closed due to flooding but once it is open, students should definitely take advantage of the cozy area.

Student Union
The Allen Chapman Activities Center or the Union is another great place to study. Especially for those students who enjoy good background noise while they are staying on top of their work. The second floor of the Union has larger tables for study groups and small tables for solo studying. The campus computer lab is also located on the second floor. Students can use the free printer in the lab as well as the 24-hour access to the computer lab with their student ID for those late-night study sessions.

Student Lounges
In most academic buildings on campus, students can easily access a student lounge or seating areas throughout the floors of the building. For example, Chapman Hall has many seating areas throughout the three floors and a student lounge on the first floor. During the first few weeks of school, take a look around the academic buildings and find all of the spots available for students to use.

Outdoor Spaces
After many hours in classrooms and dorm halls, a little fresh air could be what you need to get through all the reading material for your course. TU makes sure students have outdoor study spaces all around campus to help them succeed. The most popular is Dietler Commons, also known as the Old U. With the nice view of Downtown Tulsa and a centralized space, many students can relax on the grass and crack open their books. There are also trees on the side of the library where students like to hang up hammocks and study there. The library also has tables and chairs right up the stairs leading toward the front door of McFarlin.
Stepping away from the heart of campus, there are a few other spots where students can study outdoors comfortably. Chapman Commons, or the New U is located in front of Collins Hall and in between Mayo Village and Lorton Village. This space is similar to the Old U but a little less centralized. There is also Jackson Commons, which sits in front of The Lorton Performance Center and the greenspace just outside the Law School. The Union also has a table and chairs outside for students to use as well as Hurricane Plaza’s small patio in between the Hardesty Holmes Center and Hardesty Hall.
